Toward Sustainable Data Centers: Model-Based Predictive Control of Liquid Cooling Systems to Minimize Emissions, Energy Consumption, and Operating Costs

Short Description

Ziel dieser Forschung is

Data centers are essential hubs of the information age and consume significant amounts of energy, particularly for their cooling systems, which are the largest consumers of electricity alongside IT components. These cooling systems also often consume large amounts of water, leading to significant environmental impacts.

A promising approach to reducing these impacts is model-based predictive control (MPR). Implementing MPR in cooling systems can significantly reduce electricity and water consumption while preventing overheating damage to processors. Additionally, the integration of thermal storage systems and their effective control via MPR can maximize the use of renewable energy and support climate neutrality.

The goal of this research is to develop an effective MPR approach for liquid-cooled data centers. The study examines the potential of MPR and the integration of thermal energy storage systems to reduce emissions, energy consumption, and operating costs in cooling systems.
